25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” --genesis 1
i am thankful to have a husband who can be so literal in his bible translation...who knows what could be next:)
it took a year to convince me, and the unfortunate part is i am still not convinced. chad kept telling me over and over again that he wanted to get chickens. to me, this was not rational thinking. why would we get chickens? we have a dog; we have a cat, and we have two small children. why, oh why would we get chickens? we are already indebted to our sweet, generous neighbors for all of eternity because they are always so willing to care for our pets each summer as we venture east for a week or two. not to mention, with the number of weddings, funerals, and births over the past few years, this is no small endeavor. oh yes, and there is christmas, so you can tack on an extra two weeks of chicken sitting over the holiday season. i just couldn't bare the thought of asking them to tend to yet another pet, but now, however, i will be asking them to care for another eight little pets.
these little beauts are called isa browns (the gold ones) and barred plymouth rock. they will have names, and i do happen to know that emerson has named at least two: pookiedoo and bing bing. we will see what she will come up with next! chad is dying to get a rooster so he can name him larry, but roosters can be quite aggressive with kids so he will be on hold for now.
my first logical question after i distinctly remember saying "NO" to chickens was: where would we keep these little (that get big) critters anyway? we have a couple of outbuildings, but i knew that none were equipped for the task of raising chickens. i could see that look in chad's eye...that one he always gets: "i have something in mind." i know the look all too well: that means there is a building project in our near future. indeed, i was correct. there was a building project, and now there is a building: a chicken coop to be exact.
as always, with my dear sweet husband, these projects start out with an old pile of wood. he then convinces me that from that old pile of rubbish something beautiful will be formed. FOR FREE! sure it will. he never disappoints, but i always know it will put us back at least of few hundred dollars, which is usually the point he reminds me that he is doing this for our family, for the girls, and for the experience! he is right about one thing: what a rich, rewarding experience it will be in watching our little birds grow!
here is the finished project. he did a great job. here's to seeing if it is publishable:)
